Jan. 31st, 2007 @ 02:41 pm Chattacon Report
Chattacon was a lot of fun, as usual. I prefer the Clarion but the Choo Choo is acceptable.

I achieved most of my goals for the con one of which was to play at least one new (to me) game. I played three! [info]toddlyles brought Blue Moon City which is as much fun to play as it is beautiful. I also played Bang! which I have owned for a while but could never get enough people together to play it. It is a lot of fun. I never won either game but I really enjoyed each one. I also played Oshi (another pretty one) which is a board game by WizKids. It's one of those simple games with a lot of different strategies.

On the non-gaming front, I had a great time at the Hypericon party. We had a really good turnout with almost no slow points. The usual suspects showed up and I met a few new people. [info]the_blackfairy and I discovered that we should form a support group for survivors of crappy jobs.

I bought a pile of 50-cent comics and a couple of new games. I had a wonderful sushi dinner and some awesome pizza (not at the same time). It was a great vacation and the weather cooperated so the walks around the huge hotel campus were not too bad.

[info]melissagay won the People's Choice art show award for the second year in a row!

The Polaris game I wanted to play didn't happen due to scheduling conflicts but I'm not too bummed about that. There will be other cons.

Speaking of which: Next stop - MidSouthCon!

We just got back from PhreakNIC which was a bunch of fun. I got to play Carcassonne with my friends. It was the first time I had played it and I really like it. I'll pick up a copy for myself soon.

I also caught [info]eldritchhobbit's presentation about dystopian fiction and how the concerns these stories raise are still with us. It was double plus good!

It also helped me nail down the setting for my NaNoWriMo novel this year. Thanks, Amy!

EDIT: Here's a blog entry which mentions a worthwhile project related to the subject of Amy's talk.

Sep. 13th, 2005 @ 03:30 pm Card Game
This year at Dragon*Con I ran a type of game I've been wanting to try for a while.

Inspired by Everway, I wanted to run a card-based game where the players as well as the GM created everything from drawn cards.

Actual Play! After a fashion. )

Sep. 9th, 2005 @ 04:55 pm Back from the Con
We got back from Dragon*Con some time on Wednesday evening which means we were gone for a full week. I needed that vacation like I need oxygen.

Highlights of the trip include the podcast panel featuring many members of the Science Fiction Podcast Network a goodly amount of roleplaying and a lot of shopping. I bought many, many discounted game books and supplements. I also picked up Mage: The Awakening and the Serenity RPG. I haven't read much of either one yet but I like what I'm seeing so far. M:tA is more rote oriented than its predecessors and it's got a lot more in the way of examples.

The "leave Brendan with his grandmother" experiment was a smashing success! WooHoo!

More details later once my brain realigns itself. Suffice it to say that spending time with my friends and meeting a few new ones was exactly what I needed.

Oh and Red Bull = good roleplaying.

It looks like the Comic Geek Speak podcast broke the story of Wizard World pulling out of Atlanta for 2006 with this interview with Gareb Shamus.

Here's a Newsarama article about it

Newsarama reports that the Wizard World/Heroes Con kerfuffle may be over:

Now, it’s looking like the weekend won’t be an either/or proposition for comic fans in the Southeast.

Newsarama has learned that WizardWorld has not made the deposit payment to the Cobb Galleria (where WizardWorld: Atlanta was slated to be held June 30th -July 2nd, 2006). Likewise, sources close to Wizard speaking to Newsarama report that the current thinking within the company is that it will officially cancel its planned Atlanta show for 2006, while eyeing debuting in Atlanta in 2007, ideally on a weekend with no other show in close proximity.

Thanks to Fanboy Rampage for bringing this to my attention.

There's this whole thing between Heroes Con and Wizard World Atlanta that I talk about here but I've just been going over the guest list for 2006 and the list of people who have already confirmed is mind-blowing. If you're into comics, that is. If you're not, it will read like a very short phone book, I guess.

If you have ever liked a comic book and you can make it to Charlotte, NC on the weekend of June 30th, 2006, go! Pre-reg is only $20!

This will be right after the con I'm helping with but I. Can. Not. Pass. This. Up.

[info]megachef, I'm guessing I'll see you there.
